Chadwick, James

1891-1974

English physicist who worked with Rutherford at Cambridge where they studied the transmutation of elements by bombarding them with alpha particles.

Beryllium released an unknown radiation that ejected protons from the nuclei. Chadwick interpreted this radiation as composed of particles without electrical charge - neutrons.

This discovery was an important contribution for atomic disintegration, since neutrons, being electrically uncharged, could penetrate undeflected into the atomic nuleus.
