|
William, the Duke of Normandy, received a vague promise
of the English throne by King Edward the Confessor, but when
the king died Edward's brother-in-law Harold obtained the succession.
William immediately invaded England. His Norman troops destroyed the English army at the battle of Hastings (1066) and killed Harold. William was crowned king of England. The Anglo - Saxon nobility was deprived of its possessions and replaced by Norman lords. In 1085 William ordered the compilation of Domesday Book, the first exhaustive survey written of England. |
