WANG AN-SHI 1021 - 1086 Chinese Statesman During the Sung dynasty the state was impoverished by the need to pay tributes to invading barbarbarians. As a result radical reforms were demanded. Wang An-shi, a poet, writer and statesman, developed a program of far-reaching reforms. He abolished tax immunities of big landowners. Forced labor on public works was abolished in favour of money payment. The buying and selling of essentials was carried on by the state. The reforms were deliberately sabotaged by the civil servants and he was compelled to resign in 1076. |
