He established a principality in Anatolia, from where he waged warfare against the Byzantines. He conquered Bursa on the Asiatic shore opposite Constantinople, proclaimed himself Sultan and established the Ottoman empire. The name of the empire derives from the Arabic form 'Uthman' of his name.
