MONTEZUMA I 1397/1410 ?-1469 Emperor of the Aztecs Montezuma I became emperor in 1440. He won fame as a military leader who expanded the boundaries of the Aztec Empire to the Gulf of Mexico. His military campaigns forced several tribes in Mexico into a united state. The war prisoners were sacrificed in exceptional cruel cerermonies. He also built an aquaduct to bring fresh water to his capital Tenochtitlan. His great-grandson Motecuzoma Xocoyotzin, or Montezuma II was emperor from 1502 to 1520 when the Spaniards came to Mexico. With the Spanish conquest the Aztec empire came to its end.
