OLEG c.838 - c.912 Russian Ruler Oleg the Wise, a Norman, ruled the northern realm of Novgorod from his capital of Kiev. He succeeded his kinsman Rurik as ruler of Novgorod and extended his realm to Smolensk and Kiev. He became the first ruler of the Kievan - Novgorod state.
He also undertook an expedition against Constantinople,
forcing the Byzantine government to sue for peace and conclude a trade
agreement with Oleg.
