EGBERT c.779 - 839 King of Wessex Egbert was King of Wessex in England from 802 until his death. The King of Mercia drove him into exile in 789.
Egbert lived in
Gaul for some years and at the court of Charlegmagne. After gaining
the West Saxon throne he formed around Wessex a kingdom so
powerful that it eventually achieved the political unification of
England.
