He saved his country from Danish conquest, laid the basis for the unification of England under the Saxon monarchy, and was famous as a lawgiver and translator of historical writings.

After battling the Danes in several battles Alfred defeated them and conquered London in 886.

The Danes withdrew to the eastern part of England, called 'Danelaw'. All English people who were not subject to the Danes recognized Alfred as their king.
