HEROD 74 BC - 4 BC Jewish King Herod I the Great was king of Judaea under the Romans. After the incorporation of Palestine into the Roman empire Herod was appointed king of the Jews by the Romans. His reign was marked by extensive building and the protection of Jews outside Palestine.
Herod displayed signs of instability and cruelty
in his last years which culminated in the murder of all infants
in Bethlehem shortly before his death.
