HAMILCAR c.275 - 228 BC General of Carthage Hamilcar Barca was a military leader of ancient Carthage in North Africa. He commanded forces in Sicily in the first Punic war against Rome. In 237 BC he conquered Spain for Carthage to compensate for the loss of Sardinia and Sicily. Spain's mineral wealth helped restore Carthaginian strength.
He also prepared
his army for a final confrontation with Rome. His son, Hannibal,
later used Spain as a base to attack Rome.
