CLAUDIUS
10 BC - A.D. 54
Roman Emperor
Claudius was born at Lugdunum (Lyon). The nephew of Tiberius, he was declared emperor by the imperial guards after the murder of Caligula in A.D. 41.

Claudius returned the government to the traditions of Augustus after the excesses of Caligula. He extended the Roman empire with the conquest of southern Britain.

He was poisoned by his fourth wife, Agrippina, who wanted the empire for her own son Nero.
