PSAMTIK I c.693 - 610 BC King of Egypt Psamtik freed Egypt from Assyrian rule, reunited the country and founded its 26th dynasty. Psamtik was named governor of a city in the Nile delta by by the Assyrian king. He formed an alliance with the king of Lydia which enabled him to subdue other Assyrian vassals in the delta.
After
he reformed the new government he was able to remove the rule
of the kings of Kush - the African kingdom which had ruled in
the South of Upper Egypt. He then proceeded to suppress the power of
the priests and settled Greek mercenaries in the Nile delta area.
