Philippus Paracelsus 1493 - 1541 Swiss Physician |
|
Philippus Theophrastus Bombastus, known as Paracelsus,
was born in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. He travelled in Europe
and the Middle East, learning about alchemy, and acquiring
great fame as a medical practitioner.
He became physician and lecturer at Basel, but his controversial views caused his exile in 1538. Paracelsus pioneered the application of chemistry to medicine, gave the most up-to-date description of syphilis and introduced the use of many drugs. Many of his theories anticipated modern medical practices. |
