Calvin was one of the chief leaders of the Protestant
Reformation, who was especially influential in England, Scotland,
Switzerland, and colonial North America.
Born at Noyon, he studied theology in Paris and law at Orleans. In 1534 he settled in Geneva. In his work 'Institutes of the Christian Religion' he presents a complete system of Christian faith, based on the Protestant principle that the Scriptures are the source of Christian truth. Calvin is known for his theocratic view of the state. He developed the pattern of church government that is called presbyterian. |
