Born in Morocco, he travelled through North Africa and Spain. After he entered the service of the Norman court of Roger II in Sicily he began a lifetime work as mapmaker.

He completed three major geographical works and published an atlas with 71 maps. He also wrote several works on geography and completed a map of the world.
