GILDAS c.504/16 - 570 Anglo-Saxon Historian Gildas was a monk and historian who wrote the first history of Britain during a time of plunder and petty warfare ('The Ruin of Britain'). His renowned learning earned him the designation Gildas Sapiens (Gildas the Wise). He denounced aristocracy and kings as incompetent plunderers. His story contains the story of King Arthur and his defeat by the Saxons. Gildas was a contemporary of King Arthur, but his work never mentions Arthur by name. |
