Saint PETER c.4 BC - A.D. 64 Christian Apostle |
|
Saint Peter is considered to be the head of Jesus' twelve
apostles and the first bishop of Rome.
Originally known as Simon, Peter, a fisherman, was called to be a disciple of Jesus at the beginning in his ministry. He received from Jesus the name Cephas (the 'Rock') and he emerged as leader of the Christian community after Jesus' death. At the Jerusalem Council in about 49 it was decided that Paul's mission should be to the Gentils and Peter's to the Jews. |
