SALADIN 1138 - 1193 Ruler of Egypt Saladin was the great Kurdish commander of Syrian forces and chief minister of Egypt. In 1186 he assumed sole rule of all Egypt and Syria. He became the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty (1186-1250) which was named after his father Ayyub. Saladin is best known as the opponent to the forces of the third Crusade and his capture of Jersusalem ending its 88-year occupation by the Franks. |
