STILICHO c.365 - 408 Roman General Stilicho, the Germanic commander of the Roman army, fought against Alaric the Goth in the Balkans, thus defending the territorial integrity of the Western empire.
In 406 he repelled an Ostrogothic invasion of Italy.
Stilicho was one of the last great Roman military commanders in the
West; in 408 he was executed by the emperor who feared his power.
